The Berthold TriStar 5 microplate reader is a high-performance multimode reader designed for a wide range of applications in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and environmental sciences. Its modular architecture allows the combination of highly sensitive filter-based detection systems with configurable monochromators, providing great flexibility for adapting the instrument to different experimental protocols.
The instrument supports multiple detection technologies, including UV-Vis absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, time-resolved fluorescence (TRF), TR-FRET, HTRF®, fluorescence polarization (FP), BRET/BRET², NanoBRET™, and AlphaScreen®, enabling the performance of quantitative and qualitative assays with high sensitivity and accuracy.
The TriStar 5 incorporates a high-performance optical system equipped with a xenon flash lamp, photomultiplier tube (PMT) detectors for fluorescence and luminescence measurements, and a photodiode for absorbance measurements. Depending on the installed configuration, the instrument can use optical filters, monochromators, or a combination of both, enabling the optimization of both wavelength selection flexibility and analytical sensitivity.
The system is compatible with 6-, 12-, 24-, 48-, 96-, and 384-well microplates and can be equipped with automated reagent injectors, temperature control, bottom reading for cell-based assays, and different plate shaking modes. These features make the instrument suitable for both routine assays and advanced research applications.
Instrument control and data acquisition are performed through the LightCompass® software, which enables the creation of experimental protocols, automated data acquisition, statistical analysis, calibration curve generation, and report generation, while also providing options compatible with regulated environments.
